Schouten & Smith book says:
Emigrated to United States of America
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Agnes Vanderlaan Boomstra said he immigrated to the USA in 1902 at age 17 to avoid conscription (for life) into the Dutch army.
She also said that James was a butcher in the Netherlands and after immigration started the family meat market, at 605 Eastern Ave. His brother Ferdinand also worked there.
First lived at 293 Logan St., and moved to 755 Logan.

More of Agnes's recollections:
My dad was conscripted into the Army when he was about 17. That was a lifetime assignment so his father gave him money to go to the US. He could never return to visit or he would be described as a deserter I guess. I know he settled in Grand Rapids and started a meat market on Eastern Ave near Sherman St.
He Loved his family and loved working in his vegetable and flower garden.

When I was about 7 we moved up around the corner to 822 Sigsbee St into a house that my Grandpa Bats and Uncles Harm and Henry built. By that time there were 4 children and we needed more room. The house on Sigsbee had a lot and a half so there was room for a huge garden, a chicken coop, a dog coop and some fruit trees and bushes. These were things my Dad loved to do for a hobby and it also gave us something to occupy our time during the summers. We weeded and picked beans, tomatoes, raspberries and whatever was ready to be picked. Pop loved gladiolas, peonies and dahlias. Mom loved asters and always had them growing somewhere. We had 7 Sisters roses growing up the side of the garage.

Marriage record lists occupation as butcher.
