Notes for James Henry van der Laan
Served in the US Army Air Corps in WWII as a belly ball turret gunner on a B17 bomber.
Shot down over Germany and imprisoned in a POW camp until the end of the war.
Enlisted 19 May 1942; trained as aerial gunner. Assigned to 351st Bomb Group, 511 Bomb Squadron, 1st Air Wing, and stationed in England. Credited with shooting down six nazi aircraft and flew in Battle of Britain. After 20 combat missions his B-17 was shot down over Anklem in northeastern Germany on 9 Oct. 1943. He was held at Stalag 17B, Krems, Austria (near Vienna) and liberated from the camp in April, 1945. His European theater service time was from 12 Apr 1943 until 9 Oct 1943. He received his military discharge on 6 Nov 1945.
While in the Army he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three clusters, the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, EAME ribbon with one bronze star and the Prisoner Of War Medal.
In civilian life, before and after military service, he was a tool and die maker for General Motors at a Fisher Body plant in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
