Doug VanderLaan, the compiler, asked his mother Marion about why his aunts Martha and Esther moved away from Michigan, even though all their siblings stayed. Here's her response:
Aunt Peg (Martha)went to to Chicago to get a better job, and probably to get away from home.
The story Aunt Peg told us was that a Hudsonville boy was sweet on Esther
and she decided she didn't want her beautiful sister marrying some hick onion farmer
so she took Esther to Chicago and put her through secretarial school. Funnily enough
the hick farmer became a millionaire... So it looks like Esther was destined for money.
